Reflecting on Memorial Day

Pastor Bill Francavilla of WindsorMeade Williamsburg recently visited with Ed Elliott and his lovely wife Doris. When Bill arrived at their home and rang the doorbell, it played The Star Spangled Banner. Needless to say, Bill knew he was at the right home for the Elliott’s are proud to be Americans.

Memorial Day is an important holiday to many. It’s a time to remember those brave men and women who risked their lives to protect our rights and freedoms. WindsorMeade resident, Ed Elliott served in the 248th Engineer Combat Battalion.

WW2 Memorial

“When I was growing up in Marysville, Ohio, I was in the marching band. Every Memorial Day we would march down to the bridge, cross the creek and lay flowers in order to honor our fallen soldiers. My parents would go the local cemetery and place flowers on the graves of their parents and relatives. On May 30, 1945, just after VE Day, I was in Germany and our Battalion held services to honor our fallen comrades. As a veteran of WWII and Korea, I feel that Memorial Day is a very special day to honor the veterans who served and gave their lives while serving in the armed forces. One year, when I was in Williamsburg, they recognized the Battle of the Bulge. I attended because I was in that battle and it was a historical time. Ultimately, I think Memorial Day is a day we should all remember and respect as honoring those who passed away in our endeavor to keep a free world.”

This Memorial Day take time to reflect and honor our soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Without them there would be no “land of the free and the home of the brave.”
